Victoria: an overview
Victoria is in the south-eastern corner of Australia. Although it is Australia's smallest state in terms of land-size, it is the most densely populated and urbanized of any other state. It has the second highest population after New South Wales, with a population of over 5 million people. Over 70% of people in the state live in
Melbourne, Australia's second largest city. The largest urban cities of Victoria are
Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo,
Shepparton,
Mildura,
Warrnambool and the Latrobe Valley.
Tourism
The capital of Melbourne is known for its cultural atmosphere, large amounts of
cafes and
shopping centres. There are many attractions in the city of Melbourne, including the Crown Casino, Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Acquarium. Beautiful areas of Melbourne include the Docklands, Southbank, Federation Square and St Kilda.
The Victorian landscape is varied and beautiful, including landscape attractions such as the Twelve Apostles, Wilson's Promontory, The Grampians, the Fairy Penguins and the Gippsland Lakes.
Regional areas which attract tourists include the historical cities of Ballarat, Beechworth, Bendigo, Castlemaine, Maldon and Daylesford.
Climate
Although Victoria is a small state, it has a highly varied climate, with hot and dry temperatures in the north-west, and cool temperatures along the coast. This variation is due to the Great Dividing Range, which runs through the centre of the state providing for milder temperatures due to its mountainous landscape. Victoria is the wettest state after
Tasmania, with the most rain falling in Gippsland and the Western District, making these areas prime locations for farming.
Economy
Having the second largest economy in Australia, the finance, insurance and property service industries in Victoria produce the largest amounts of income. However, the largest proportion of people work in the community, social and personal services sector. The manufacturing sector also generates a large amount of income and employment for the people of Victoria, with 15% of people being employed in this industry.
